I don't understand how the upkeep works. Is it basically the same as freshwater, where you just need to install a filter and put a bunch of stuff around the area?

Yeah basically. If you put in coral then you need an extra thing to make a small current (I don't have coral). Also you need to keep the salinity stable but that isn't hard. The main challenge of saltwater is that everything is overpriced to shit because some of the fish came from the ocean but you can save a lot by buying regular ass fish gear because it hardly makes a difference.
