You mightve all heard by now but in case you havent; discord will require physical identification. The masses threaten to leave en masse. My question is; where will they go? Afaik discord is the only website of its kind as all competitors have bit the bullet

Most 'cord users don't just use der 'cord, but also other sites like xitter and reddit. Most will just congregate there.
