Present day submales (or just weird faggots, if curtness needs to be an involved factor) replicate the looks of women on an extreme delay generally. I think it has to do with their own perceptions of women being warped, stereotypical, and porn-maddened, but I'm not great with the details. Celibacy only seems like a modern invention in our perceptions due to the simple fact that the celibates of history had no one to carry their name and legacy beyond the scope of a single human life.
