Imagine if you have the best parents in the world but instead of honoring them and honoring them as parents you find some violent crackheads that do many bad things and you decide to look up to them as parents, I think that is idolatry

Never meet your heroes basically. When you put someone to the same pedestal as God, they'll eventually disappoint or better you in some form, and basing your values around a mortal being who sins will cause you to become morally inept. Sure, faithful Christians get screwed over as mortals a lot too, but if they're actually faithful they'll be rewarded with immortality in Heaven.
An example could be how I used to idolize Annoying Orange when I was 7. As the TV show started, the channel stopped doing the classic "orange vs food" formula and did less interesting stuff over time. Now its creator has trooned out, and the IP hangs on by a thread of making unfunny leftist politicoal + EPI'ing kids
