I think it was from a post that went like "Everyone with this profile picture is racist and homophobic be careful." Pretty sure it got famous accross multiple platforms and you would occasionally see people with this profile picture. I personally got this from preddit.
The only reason he got hate for this was because it obviously arose out of a sexual fetish. It's actually a pretty good idea except for the fact that it may be cruel to the animals. We may want to use robotic animals so real animals are not suffering.
